Been to Grandfather but didn't get to do the Calloway Peak hike as I was there for work. Still an awesome experience and have some great pics of the Blue Ridge fall colors and some incredible memories.
I imagine the summer trip made for hot and sweaty too?
Fall was a mix, we were there from... about mid-Oct almost up until Thanksgiving. It was really pleasant in October, by mid-Nov the mornings were pretty chilly and occasionally down to freezing. By that time I'd been in NE Oregon in the Blue Mountains for a couple years where it struggled to get above 0 in the dead of winter, so 30s wasn't a big deal for us.
MUCH drier spring and fall, I live in Missouri now and pretty much east of the Rockies it's the inverse of what you're used to: spring and fall are dry and "fire season", summer is hot sticky and generally pretty nasty. Dehumidifiers and AC are a requirement down here in the Ozarks, at least for our former-Californian selves.
I grew up in New York and am now completely averse to wet cold. It seeps through your clothes. The Mountain West (maybe the only time zone you haven't lived in?) will spoil you with its great year-round pleasant weather.
Time-zone wise technically the only ones I've permanently lived in are Pacific and Central, though on the Malheur we were only an hour away from Mountain time.
I've had the privilege of traveling over a pretty decent chunk of the country fighting, lighting, and planning for fires over the last 20 years. New England is one region of the country I haven't set foot in at all, though I almost got picked to go to Mass to teach a class last month. someday!

OMG it was so hot and sticky and we're desert people, not accustomed to such things. The fall must be gorgeous.
