https://bookshop.org/p/books/goliath-s-curse-the-history-and-future-of-societal-collapse-luke-kemp/d320180b7aac6931 This book is all about collapse.

We spent some time earlier this year with a friend who grew up in East Germany. Yes to everything on your list, but she would add community as essential to survival in hard times.

A permaculture expert I was on an panel with had a similar list. The Native American woman the other side of me commented "Where's your community? These are all individual solutions. That's not my people's way."

How are the Pueblos in NM, who have lived through collapses, preparing?

I agree, community is essential and "practice localism" on our list speaks to that. Look at 1850s New Mexico when people were living off the land, everyone was bartering for goods, there is no individualism. No one can do it all alone. The Pueblos will be fine; they have all these skills in the bag.

Thanks. The Pueblos are a great role model!

Here's a piece I wrote last year after visiting the Pueblo Indian Cultural Center in ABQ. Have you been? If we lived the values of the Puebloans, we wouldn't be in this situation in the first place 😭 https://open.substack.com/pub/johannadebiase/p/ancient-futures?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=dax8a

Thanks. I haven’t been! I have been to Taos and visited some of the pueblos around Santa Fe. I’ll add it to the very long list of things I want to do in NM next time I’m there.

Same with the tribes here in the PNW. So much to teach us.

I read this book! And was actually trying to stir up some discussion among our subscribers about it last month. Very compelling histories of collapse. His antidotes I found more uneven. What did you think?

But yes to community as essential, and more on that coming very soon! When Covid hit, the Pueblos and the Navajo Nation seemed far more successful at coming together, largely out of necessity as they saw some of the first and worst outbreaks. So maybe a double-edged sword there… not really sure. But they do some to be better at at least having the right conversations.

I'm only about 1/3 way through, so still deep in history. A lot of conjecture, maybe cherry picking examples.

I'd love to see a study on indigenous cultures and their response.
